To clean or not to clean…

Are you cleansing with me?

Today is the first day of the Gentle Body Cleanse.  Woohoo!  Not cleansing?  That's ok – this post is equally for you.  I want you to know a few things about cleansing, why, how, what… all the questions I know you've got going on in your mind.

The humble detox has got a bad rap of late.  General health professionals have slammed them, suggesting they are a gimmick.  Once upon a time, I might have agreed.  But, after practicing in my clinic for almost 9 years now, I see the benefits of a supported cleanse (which may differ slightly from a detox in a box).  It's never going to hurt to give your body a rest from the processed, sugary, addictive foods that easily sneak their way in, even when we have the best intentions.  I'm guilty.  I aim for a sugar free/fructose free lifestyle – but sometimes, it slips in.  

So sure, your liver is probably doing a fab job of keeping your body working.  Some might argue that this is the sole reason why you don't need to cleanse – you have a liver that does all the hard work for you!  But, that liver can only take so much and way back when we were designed, toxins, chemicals and pollutants weren't factored in.  Our body is affected by such things, everyday. In our food, our water, our air.  And whilst we can't remove these things, we can give our bodies a rest from the overload.  When we cleanse using alkaline foods, we are basically eating very simple foods that our body easily digests, meaning it can let go of the other stuff it is holding onto.  

Emotionally our bodies also love a good cleanse.  From a Chinese Medicine perspective, each organ has an emotion paired to it. When stress builds up in the body, it too becomes toxic.  You know when you get bad news, and you feel sick in the stomach?  Or your heart hurts from heartache?  Or maybe you get choked up and tight in the chest at times?  These are your organs communicating.  Remember, the gut is our emotional centre and our liver cops heaps when we are stressed or upset.  So for this reason, it is also excellent to cleanse. It means, there's a possibility that whilst you are cleansing, you might feel a little more vulnerable than usual.  Acknowledge this, observe it and be kind to yourself.  It's all part of the process and you will feel so fab on the other side, you'll wonder why you waited so long to cleanse!

Here's a little secret.  You may lose weight when you cleanse.  It's a no-brainer really.  Adipose tissue (fat) is your body's protection against toxins running riot in your systems.  When your body is running smoothly, with fewer toxins, there is less a need for your body to produce fat to protect itself.  So effectively, when we eat poor quality foods riddled with chemicals (and yes they are everywhere!), our bodies use adipose tissue to trap it and tuck it out of harms way.  So when we cleanse, this isn't happening, plus it gives the body a break from the foods that contribute to weight gain meaning you might shed a kilo or two.  Winning!

Of course all these things are fabulous for getting your body on track, your gut back to happy and boost fertility.  A healthy body relies on a healthy gut and your fertility depends on this.  It's a great time to take the step to a more fertility you.

So now what to do if you aren't registered for the gentle cleanse that starts today?  Never fear.  I'll be back with another cleanse right after Christmas!

    I started cleansing yesterday instead of today. It’s not a huge leap from my normal diet – only no meat and caffeine. But after day one I already feel clearer.
    I have energy as well as clarity.
    I love it!

    Same here Amelia,
    I just started today and also not very far fetched from my regular diet but will help to keep me strict for these few days.

    Natalie, just wondering if this is ok. I didn’t get organic apple juice but I had an apple which I put through my blender with some filtered water and then added the heaped teaspoon of shake powder to that. Can you tell me if I may be missing out on something imperative by doing it this way.

    Also, is it ok to use my own recipes, if I don’t have all your required ingredients?
    I have a bunch of veggies from the markets from the weekend and will mainly be eating them as a combination of fresh & cooked with coconut oil and a squeeze of lemon juice & quinoa. Really simple, clean and tasty.
